Pompeii & Vesuvius Tour Description
Discover Pompeii and the still active Volcano that brought the bustling Roman city to its terrible end in this exclusive day trip from Rome to Pompeii & Vesuvius. After a comfortable transfer from Rome on an air-conditioned coach, we begin our day high above the city and bay of Naples , on the ridge of the crater of the famous Mount Vesuvius. Infamous for the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD, Vesuvius has erupted many times since , and is today regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the 3,000,000 people living in its immediate vicinity and the volcano’s tendency towards explosive eruptions. From the parking area, it is a 20 minute upward hike to the crater through soft volcanic ash and pumice , and the view from the top is well worth the while. After our adventurous morning we’ll take a leisurely lunch break, where you can experience the world-famous pizza Naples is known for. When you are ready to go , it’s on to the highlight of the day: Pompeii. Sitting in the ominous shadow of Vesuvius, the now ruined city of Pompeii was a sprawling metropolis of shops and residences, restaurants, gyms and brothels. We’ll visit the forum, the center of Pompeii’s political and social life, as well as view the startling plaster death casts of the victims of the catastrophic eruption that destroyed the city , freezing forever in time their last second of life.
Please note:
In cases of inclement weather or strikes, the crater of Vesuvius may be closed to visitors. If this is the case an alternative will be provided, either an extended tour inside Pompeii or a visit to Archaeological museum. The hike up to the crater of Vesuvius is optional and requires a good level of general fitness to complete. The hike is uphill at a 14 degree angle and 20 minutes long (about 1 mile). The hike is predominately on soft ground, adequate footwear is recommended. Those who choose may remain at the parking area and enjoy the views. Temperatures on the Volcano may be a bit lower than temperatures on the ground, a sweater or light jacket is recommended, especially outside of the summer months. This tour involves a fair amount of walking, comfortable shoes are recommended. This tour must be re-confirmed prior to departure.
