Split Riviera Highlights
Modern Split is the product of 17 centuries of building, renovating and remodeling so that the new of today combines in harmony with the old of yesterday. At the core of the sprawling cityscape is the palace that Emperor Diocletian built for his retirement at the turn of the 4th century. What began as an imperial residence and fortified camp is today an intriguing warren of narrow cobblestone streets, where pre-Romanesque churches live alongside Gothic Chapels, history-filled museums, art galleries and inviting restaurants. Depart the pier and drive to the town of Trogir. This small town is located on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge. Except for some green parks, stone houses, palaces, churches, monasteries, towers and old city walls occupy the entire island. The streets are narrow and they truly give a feel of how life might have been in the old days. Visit the main attraction in Trogir, the 13th century Cathedral of St. Lawrence that is considered one of the finest examples of sacral architecture in Croatia. The unusual construction with three naves and three semi circular apses dominates the whole town. The main portal carved by the local artist Radovan in the 13th century is world famous. Afterwards, view the exteriors of the Town Loggia, Town Hall and the Cipiko Palace. Leaving Trogir, travel just outside of town to the Pantan or Old Mill for local refreshments and to be entertained by a folk group who will entertain with Dalmatian songs. Returning to Split, drive through the town where your guide will point out highlights such as the Cathedral, Golden and Silver Gates and Peristyle Square before returning to the pier.
