DAY 1 – Depart the USA

Today you will fly across the Atlantic from the United States to Rome, Italy.  Flights that depart from the United States arrive in Italy to meet the tour the following day. If you are flying to Italy from the west coast cities like Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Francisco, San Diego then you may depart early to arrive in Italy the following morning.

DAY 2 – Arrive in Rome

The all-inclusive escorted Italy tour with airfare includes transfers from Rome Fiumicino airport to your accommodations. If you prefer to arrange your own air itinerary to Italy please let us know if you would like us to help you with transfers.  Today is your first day in Italy.  There are no escorted tours of Rome scheduled today. If you arrive early then you have a free day to stroll around Rome’s ancient cobblestones or have a rest.  This evening you will meet your tour director and traveling companions at an orientation and welcome to Italy authentic Roman dinner at a popular local restaurant featuring regional delicacies and fine Italian wines.

DAY 3 – Tour Ancient Rome

On a locally guided tour of the Vatican Museums* explore the Papal palace housing priceless artifacts from ancient Egypt along with works by great Renaissance masters such as Perugino, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio. In the Sistine Chapel, marvel at Michelangelo’s frescoed ceiling and brilliant Last Judgement. Next, wander through the towering columns of St. Peter’s Basilica, a daring feat of human artistry and engineering. Admire the baroque spirals of Bernini’s altar canopy and gaze up at Michelangelo’s dome – still the tallest in the world.

Later this afternoon, take in views of the River Tiber, the Circus Maximus and the Colosseum during a panoramic drive back to your hotel.

The evening is yours. Perhaps you’ll join an optional dinner in a popular restaurant, indulging in a hearty meal accompanied by wine and local entertainment.

DAY 4 – Rome to Umbria visiting Assisi and Perugia

This morning after breakfast the tour departs Rome and travels north to the region of Umbria. Known as Italy’s green heart, the region is known for its rolling hills and charming tours. The first destination is Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis. Take in the old-world atmosphere on a guided walking tour of the old city, including the Basilica of St. Francis. Then you’re off to medieval Perugia, the historic capital of Umbria. Behold one of the grandest squares in Italy – the Piazza IV Novembre – and delight in the medieval palaces and ornate cathedrals.

DAY 5 – Travel From Umbria to Tuscany: Cortona and Florence

Today you’ll enjoy a scenic journey through Tuscany’s graceful low-lying hills brings you to the Etruscan city of Cortona. Perched on the side of a hill, take in the ornate facades and medieval architecture. Peek at the adjacent Lake Trasimeno, situated off in the distance. You might recognize the city as the charming setting for the book and film Under the Tuscan Sun.

Afterward arrive in Florence – the “Cradle of the Italian Renaissance” – visit the world-famous Academy Gallery to see Michelangelo’s incredible statue of David.

DAY 6 – Florence City Tour

This morning you’ll wake up in the Renaissance city Florence. Dduring your cultural tour of Florence enjoy views of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Palazzo Vecchio and the Church of Santa Croce.

The remainder of the day is at leisure to enjoy this fascinating city on your own. You have time to see the Duomo where Brunelleschi’s Dome, sitting atop the Florence Cathedral, is a testament to man’s ingenuity during the Renaissance. Across from the Duomo is the Florence Baptistry. There you’ll see the famous golden doors called “Gates of Paradise” by Ghiberti. Located next to the Duomo and Baptistry is the Campanile, the clock tower, designed by the great Giotto.

This evening perhaps you’ll join an after-hours tour of the 14th-century Certosa monastery, followed by dinner featuring local wines, Tuscan food, and live entertainment.

This afternoon, journey through central Italy, crossing the Apennine Mountains toward the Po River Valley, passing through the Italian regions Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, and Veneto.

Enjoy some time at leisure to explore Bellagio’s charms before sailing back to Como where you check into your hotel in the late afternoon.

DAY 10  –   Travel Home
