It has the medieval walls, the art, and the views — without the crowds and with prices still aimed at locals.

What is Cingoli known for?

Cingoli sits at about 2000 feet above sea level, and locals call it il Balcone delle Marche — the Balcony of the Marche — for good reason. From the terrace along the town’s almost fully intact medieval walls, the view sweeps from the Apennine ridges across the entire region to the Adriatic, and on a clear day all the way to the Croatian mountains. It’s the arrival moment I build every Cingoli visit around.

Then there’s the art. The Palazzo Comunale’s Sala degli Stemmi holds Lorenzo Lotto’s Madonna del Rosario — a monumental oil painting signed and dated 1539, commissioned for the town’s church of San Domenico. Finding a Lotto altarpiece of this caliber in a hill town of a few thousand people is exactly the kind of thing I love about the Marche.

Today the Lotto is in the town hall. It was painted for San Domenico’s high altar, and that church has been closed since the 2016 earthquake. The canvas measures over 12 feet tall.

And the money angle is real. This isn’t a tourist-trap economy: the food press that covered the Borgo dei Borghi win kept coming back to the prices — homemade pasta around €10–16 and three-course local meals in the €25–35 range. My clients consistently tell me Cingoli is where their travel budget suddenly went further.

What are the best things to do in Cingoli?

This is the half-day itinerary I give my clients:

• Walk the medieval walls to the Belvedere — the circuit is the single best thing in town. Do the terrace first, while the light is good and before lunch.
• Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and the Palazzo Comunale — go upstairs to the Sala degli Stemmi for Lotto’s 1539 Madonna del Rosario. Budget 30 minutes; it’s the cultural anchor of the visit.
• The Collegiate Church of Sant’Esuperanzio — 13th-century Romanesque-Gothic, dedicated to the town’s patron saint, with a carved portal dated 1295. It stands just outside the walls. Sant’Esuperanzio’s sacristy holds Sebastiano del Piombo’s Flagellation
• The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta on the central square, then the Baroque interior of San Filippo Neri — gilded stucco and twisted altar columns worth a look.
• Lunch at a local trattoria — order the homemade pasta and a glass of wine from the Morro d’Alba area nearby. This is where the €12 pasta headline comes from; it’s real.
• If you have the afternoon, drive down to Lago di Cingoli (Lake Castreccioni) for a lakeside stroll — the town’s Museo del Lago explains the area’s nature if you’re traveling with kids.

How do you get to Cingoli from Ancona?

Cingoli is about 30 miles from Ancona — roughly a 45-minute drive, and it’s around 30 minutes from Ancona airport.

Be honest with yourself about one thing: this is genuinely a car trip. Cingoli has no train station. The nearest rail stop is Jesi, on the Rome–Ancona line (Trains from Roma Termini reach Jesi in about 3h11m), and from there the Contram bus takes about 35 minutes and costs €2–3, running roughly every three hours Monday to Saturday.

With a rental car it’s effortless; without one, it takes real planning.

What can you combine with a Cingoli day trip?
