The Famous ‘Bikini Girls’ Mosaic at Villa Romana del Casale

This 4th-century AD luxury Roman villa boasts the largest and richest collection of ancient Roman mosaics in the world—over 3,500 square meters of extraordinarily well-preserved floors, crafted with millions of colorful tesserae likely by North African artisans.
You’ll have ample time on your guided tour to explore these masterpieces, protected under modern elevated walkways for stunning close-up views.
Piazza Armerina Highlights: The Famous ‘Bikini Girls’ Mosaic at Villa Romana del Casale
Among the villa’s treasures is the iconic “Bikini Girls” mosaic (Room of the Ten Maidens, early 4th century AD). On our most recent guided tours in 2025, guests are always struck by its massive scale and vivid detail.
This celebrated scene depicts ten athletic young women (nine in ancient two-piece sportswear—a strophium breastband and subligaculum loincloth, definitely workout gear, not swimwear!):
- Long-jumping with halteres (hand weights)
- Throwing the discus
- Running and playing ball games
- One victor crowned with a laurel wreath and palm frond by a toga-clad official
It likely commemorates a private pentathlon-style competition or festival, hosted by the villa’s elite owner (possibly linked to Emperor Maximian). Nearly 1,700 years ago, these fit Roman women embodied strength, beauty, and athletic pursuit—echoing modern fitness culture in a timeless way. It’s no surprise this is a perennial tour favorite!
Don’t miss other iconic mosaics, like the epic Great Hunt corridor depicting exotic animals captured for Roman games.
After exploring the villa, the tour continues to Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian), ancient Greece’s most beautiful city according to Cicero. Arrive for a relaxing evening and overnight stay—perfect for strolling Ortigia Island’s charming streets.
Overnight: Syracuse
Meals: Breakfast
DAY 6 – Syracuse and Catania
Today you’ll tour Syracuse’s archaeological site for a guided visit of the 5th-century-BC Greek Theater, the Garden of Paradise, the Ear of Dionysus, the Altar of Hieron II, the Roman Amphitheater, and the Cordmaker’s Cave. After the tour of Syracuse the tour continues to Catania, where you may enjoy some free time in its historic center. You will also be treated to a tasting of Arancino tasting, which is an authentic Sicilian fried stuffed rice ball, one of Sicily’s most famous street foods. Then its on to the Taormina Riviera where you’ll spend the next two nights..
