Basilicata’s beaches stretch along two of Italy’s coasts. 

The beaches on southern Italy’s west coast are on the Tyrrhenian Sea. To the north is Campania. To the south is Calabria.

In between is a small stretch of the regions’s beaches around Maratea. These Tyrrhenian Sea beaches are rugged and rocky, similar to the beaches on Northern Italy’s Riviera di Levante.

Fiumicello Beach

This hidden cove features pristine waters and picturesque surroundings.

High limestone cliffs bookend the sandy beach. The contrast between the cliffs and the clear blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea is striking.

The beach is not crowded. No tourists. The sand is pristine. It is an idyllic spot for relaxation and soaking up the sun.

To access the beach descend hundreds of steps or arrive by boat.

The beach is part of the Christ’s Beaches (Spiagge di Cristo) protected area. Above the beach is the famous Christ statue standing above Maratea at the top of the mountain.

The best nearby hotel is Villa delle Meraviglie. 

La Secca di Maratea

Also known as Marinella Beach located on the Tyrrhenian Sea.

It is a beautiful spot well away from the coastal road with a secluded bay. The secluded beach offers a serene cove with a restaurant and amenities.

We like this beach becuase it is easily acessible. It is nice hidden gem to unwind, enjoy the beauty of the pebbly shore, and swim in the crystal clear waters.

There is a restaurant that serves cold dishes and panini.

Bring some kind of beach footwear to get you over the pebbles. La Secca supply towels and you may rent an umbrella.

Lido Metaponto

The beach at Lido di Metaponto is on the Ionian Sea near the town of Bernalda. There is a paver broadwalk miles long.

The beach includes soft golden stretches of sand and shallow, turquoise water. It is an ideal destination for families and beachgoers of all ages.

Lifeguard are on duty during the summer. There are other amenities such as loungers and umbrellas for rent.

Pine trees and palm trees line the coastline. The trees provide shade and a scenic backdrop for visitors.

Closeby are the archaeological sites of Metaponto. There you’ll find ancient Greek ruins such as the Tavole Palatine (Palatine Tables) and the Temple of Hera.

Nearby, you can stay at the Terre dei Cavalieri, a charming farmhouse surrounded by olive groves. Enjoy a stay and indulge in its menu that emphasizes local ingredients.

Spiaggia di Policoro

Spigaggia di Policoro is on the Ionian Sea. Its shallow water and soft sandy shore make it perfect for a family-friendly trip. 

It is part of the Coastal Dunes Nature Reserve. This long beach features fine white sand and relatively calm Ionian Sea waters.

The beach facilities include beach clubs, playgrounds, and beach volleyball courts. There are water sports such as snorkeling and other kid-friendly activities..

Families can also explore ancient ruins and walk among the wild in nature trails in the nearby Park of Metaponto.

Heraclea Hotel Residence is a nice place to spend the night. This beach resort offers comfortable rooms with easy access to the beach.

We traveled to this area to enjoy the beach and visit Heraclea, an ancient Greek colony.

Macarro Beach

A beautiful beach in Maratea on the Tyrrhenian Sea. This beach is virtually unknown to tourists. Climb down the stairs to acess the beach.

The stunning black sands and deep blue waters of Macarro Beach have made it a favourite with Italian locals.

Dramatic limestone cliffs surround Macarro beach on both ends. The rock formations provide a dramatic backdrop to the coastal area.

There are several sea caves and grottos to explore at the base of the cliffs on the western end of the beach.

Marina di Pisticci

Pisticci Marina on the Ionian Sea offers a quiet beach experience. Like the other beaches it has soft sand and calm water.

Close to this beach, you’ll find Hotel Marinagri, a stylish seaside resort with a golf course and a marina. This hotel includes an extensive spa and wellness center. 

Spiaggia dell’Anginarra (Acquafredda)

This little strip on the Tyrrhenian Sea offers stunning views of the surrounding cliffs and lush Mediterranean vegetation. It is relatively secluded.

This destination is ideal for those who want to get away from it all.

We stayed at Hotel Gabbiano for a few days. We enjoyed the beach and hotel swimming pool. And we indulged in the delicious local cuisine.

Spiaggia di Castrocucco, Maratea Beach

Located at the southern end of the region’s border with Calabria. It is also known under the name of A Gnola. 

it is one of Basilicata’s largest beaches along the Tyrenhhenia Coast. There is plenty of free parking and free beach.  

Many Italians take advantage of the local campsites. 

Spiaggia Nera (Cala Jannita)

Maratea on the Tyrrhenian Sea is famous for its rugged coastline and hidden coves. One of the notable beaches is Spiaggia Nera (Black Beach), known for its dark volcanic beach.

This picturesque little cove includes beautifully transparent emerald waters. The sand is pebbles not a soft sand. You can rent loungers and umbrellas.

To access the beach you will walk down steps.

Nearby, you can stay at the Santavenere Hotel, a luxury hotel perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. Its unique feature is its panoramic views of the coastline and the nearby Christ the Redeemer statue

Spiaggia Terzo Cavone (Scanzano Jonico)

Spiaggia Terzo Cavone facing the Ionian sea offers a pristine and secluded beach. Breathtaking natural scenery surrounds the beach.

Reaching the beach requires some effort. The tranquil atmosphere and unspoiled beauty make it well worth the journey. It is one of the nicest and tranquil beaches in Basilicata.
