DAY 3, Friday – Bari’s Old City
This morning’s Bari tour begins in Old City (Bari Vecchia). Here you’ll see the Bari Cathedral and Romanesque Basilica of San Nicola, where relics of Father Christmas St. Nicholas are found. Then its on to the Castello Normanno-Svevo built by the Normans in the 12th century. This afternoon you have time to stroll around Bari’s pretty squares and the harbor, enjoy the architecture and the cafes. DAY 5, Sunday – Alberobello and Lecce
This morning you’ll travel from Bari south to Lecce known as “Florence of the South” because of its baroque architecture. Along the way you’ll visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Alberobello to tour the conical stone huts called trulli. Built since the 16th century, the conical roofs are mortarless construction, a prehistoric building technique used in this region. After you’ll visit a local agriturismo, known as a Masseria, for a lunch with regional specialties and local wines. Upon arrival in Lecce your guide will show the Piazza del Duomo and the Roman amphitheater, which dates back to the 2nd century, and Basilica of Santa Croce the masterpiece of Southern Baroque. Then you’ll have free time to enjoy one of Italy’s biggest passeggiata – an evening stroll – among the city’s gorgeous Baroque architecture. DAY 7, Tuesday – Ostuni, Matera
This morning you’ll depart the beautiful Lecce for your journey to Matera in the region of Basilicata. Along the way you’ll enjoy an excursion to the seaside town Ostuni, known as the White City because of its white painted buildings, and which dates back to the Stone age. In Ostuni you’ll have time to stroll through the city’s alleyways and hills up to the Ostuni’s magnificent cathedral. After time on your own the trip continues to Matera, which dates all the way back to the Paleolithic age. Upon arrival you’ll learn about Matera’s famous ancient stone cave houses known as Sassi. The Sassi are believed to be the first human settlements in Italy. In the 2nd century they were used as churches. Inside the caves are frescoes, which are earliest religious paintings in Italy. Over the centuries, the Sassi were adapted into family homes. Tonight, dinner together at the hotel in Matera.

DAY 8, Wednesday – Mt. Vesuvius, Pompeii, Sorrento
This morning you’ll drive from Basilicata to southern Italy’s most famous region Campania. The first destination on today’s itinerary is Pompeii. Located at the base of Mount Vesuvius, it was a thriving ancient Roman city of 20,000 residents when it was frozen in time under Mt. Vesuvius’ volcanic ash 2,000 years ago. In Pompeii an expert tour guide will walk you through the preserved ruins including the Temples of Apollo, Jupiter and the Ancient Forum. After Pompeii you’ll continue on the southern Italian resort town Sorrento, located on the cliffs of the Sorrentine peninsula. There you’ll enjoy three nights of spectacular panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples, Capri, Mt Vesuvius, and Naples.
