DAY 3, Explore Herculaneum then Board your Cruise Around Italy
The créme de la créme of Italy cruises begins today… but first, travel to the coast on a fascinating excursion to the ruins of Herculaneum. The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD is infamous – and while the ruins of famous Pompeii are well known, those of the upscale city of Herculaneum, buried under ash that same day, are better preserved. Explore the ruins with a local guide, then travel to Naples for a traditional lunch and a sightseeing tour before embarking the yacht Le Ponant for your 7-night cruise. Today breakfast, lunch and dinner is included.
DAY 4, Explore Amalfi Coast and Ravello before we Cruise to Aeolian Islands
A guided walk awaits you in the picturesque town of Amalfi itself; then set out on the mountainous route along the Amalfi Coast, one of the most spectacular drives in the world. Arrive in stunning Ravello, perched on cliffs overlooking the sea. Visit Villa Rufolo, the former residence of several popes, where you’ll savor outstanding coastal views. Enjoy a wonderful lunch of seasonal specialties in Ravello and some time to explore on your own. Return to Le Ponant, which sets a course for the Aeolian Islands this evening. Today breakfast, lunch and dinner is included.
DAY 5, Sailing the Wine Drunk Seas Around Aeolian Islands
The next port of call is Lipari, the largest of the seven Aeolian Islands, noted for its colorful houses, 17th-century cathedral and 16th-century castle; see them on a sightseeing excursion. Sail by the island of Stromboli tonight; one of the world’s few constantly active volcanoes, its eruptions will provide a fiery – and unforgettable – nighttime show that’s a must among Italy cruises… and one of the highlights of yours. Today breakfast, lunch, and dinner is included.
DAY 6, Segesta and Erice Sicily
Dock in Castellammare in northwest Sicily and drive to ancient Segesta. Take in the unfinished temple encircled by 36 massive Doric columns, which was started in 426 BC and is remarkably preserved. Continue on to the age-old walled town of Erice, the mythological seat of the Roman goddess Venus, where you’ll see the Norman Castello di Venere and explore a bit on your own. Ride a cable car to nearby Trapani to rejoin Le Ponant and set sail for Sicily’s traditional capital, Palermo, as this most memorable of southern Italy cruises continues. Today breakfast, lunch, and dinner is included.
DAY 7, Palermo, Sicily
Today Le Ponant calls on Palermo, the Sicilian capital, once considered among Europe’s grandest cities; because the port is set within the city’s pedestrian center, you can walk right off the ship and into Palermo’s historic heart. See the Cathedral with its mix of architectural styles, the Palazzo dei Normani, Fontana Pretoria and Porto Nuovo. Your ship sets off for Taormina this evening. Today breakfast, lunch, and dinner is included.
DAY 8, Taormina, Sicily
Admire the astounding views as your voyage to Italy cruises to Taormina, a terraced town clinging to high cliffs on the east coast of Sicily, with Mt. Etna towering in the distance. Survey the Teatro Greco, featuring both Greek and Roman elements, and stroll the Corso Umberto, Old Town Taormina’s beautiful main pedestrian street lined with cafés and pasticcerie. Dinner tonight is back aboard the ship, bound for Siracusa.
DAY 9, Siracusa, Sicily
The ship docks at Ortigia Island for a visit to Siracusa, Sicily, once an ancient Greek stronghold. Check out the Neapolis Parco Archeologico, highlighted by a 15,000-seat, rock-hewn amphitheater where the works of Greek playwrights were once staged. Discover Latomia del Paradiso to see what you hear through the Ear of Dionysius; meander around Ortigia on your own, and don’t miss the Doric Temple of Apollo. Return to Le Ponant and enjoy dinner at sea this evening, bound for Malta.
DAY 10, Malta
This most exciting of southern Italy luxury cruise tour concludes as you disembark in Malta’s chief port of Valletta, founded by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century. A guided tour includes the medieval walled city of Mdina, and a drive around St. Julian’s Bay. The walking tour highlight in Valletta is the art treasure-filled Co-Cathedral of St. John, one of the world’s finest examples of Baroque architecture. Share fond memories with your fellow travelers at a farewell reception followed by dinner.
DAY 11, Ciao Italy Luxury Cruise Tour
Italian Tourism’s Sicily and mainland Italy cruises conclude in Valletta, Malta. A transfer from Hotel Phoenicia Malta to Malta International Airport is included. Please allow 3 hours for flight check-in.
